We’re Banning Facial Recognition. We’re Missing the Point. [https://www.schneier.com/essays/archives/2020/01/were_banning_facial_.html]
I agree wholeheartedly with Bruce Schneier on this one. We shouldn’t make the mistake of banning something whose use is determined by the ulterior motives of the users and not the technology itself.
Population Control Isn’t the Answer to Climate Change. Capitalism Is. [https://reason.com/video/population-control-isnt-the-answer-to-climate-change-capitalism-is/]
Capitalism fosters innovation, indeed. I do believe that contraceptives should be used along with new approaches to climate change, since population growth generally spikes in low-income countries where women don’t have equitable access to birth control.
The tricky economics of all-you-can-eat buffets [https://thehustle.co/the-economics-of-all-you-can-eat-buffets/]
I like how detailed this article is in terms of strategy and pricing breakdowns as they explain the low-margin, low-manpower niche of buffets.
The Enemies of Writing [https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/01/packer-hitchens/605365/]
This is a lovely vignette on the late, great Christopher Hitchens and his contribution to free-thinking as well as a good reminder of the need for down-to-earth objective reasoning in the face of its many politically-correct enemies.
Prime Number Hide-and-Seek: How the RSA Cipher Works [http://www.muppetlabs.com/~breadbox/txt/rsa.html]
Not your average refresher on arithmetic, but a good insight into how the RSA cipher actually works. A good read either way even if, like me, you’re not mathematically inclined.
Still Corners - Black Lagoon [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpbrvJzHITU]
Random song from one of my favorite bands (their sound is quite unique).
Seeing Around the Corner With Lasers—and Speckle [https://spectrum.ieee.org/cars-that-think/sensors/automotive-sensors/seeing-around-corner-lasers-speckle]
Interesting approach using interference patterns to help deduce what’s actually there. I imagine it’ll be useful from military applications to driverless cars once the technology gets out of the lab and into the real world.
